Arabia Incognita. Raport polskiego ambasadora

Nakładem wydawnictwa M-D-M w styczniu 2019 roku ukazała się książka amb. Krzysztofa Płomińskiego Arabia Incognita. Raport polskiego ambasadora. To fascynująca lektura dla każdego, kto interesuje się pracą dyplomaty i funkcjonowaniem służby zagranicznej naszego kraju, a w szczególności jego interesami na Bliskim Wschodzie. Autor trwale związał się z tym regionem od czasu specjalistycznych studiów w moskiewskim Instytucie Stosunków Międzynarodowych (MGIMO). W służbie zagranicznej przeszedł wszystkie urzędnicze szczeble - na placówkach w Libii, Jordanii, Iraku i Arabii Saudyjskiej oraz w MSZ – od referenta do ambasadora w Bagdadzie i Rijadzie oraz dyrektora Departamentu Afryki i Bliskiego Wschodu.
Raport prezentuje drogę Autora do dyplomacji, realia pracy na placówkach i w centrali Ministerstwa oraz osobiste doświadczenia i przeżycia, niekiedy dramatyczne. Opisywane sprawy, okraszone ciekawostkami i anegdotami, dotyczą takich tematów jak wielotysięczna obecność Polaków w krajach arabskich w okresie PRL, odbudowa stosunków z Izraelem na przełomie transformacji, brawurowa i wysoce korzystna dla interesów państwa akcja wywiadu w Iraku, ewakuacja polskich obywateli i personelu ambasady RP z tego kraju oraz przejęcie tam odpowiedzialności za interesy USA, budowa od zera relacji III RP z naftowymi państwami obszaru Zatoki, w tym z Arabią Saudyjską, gdzie Autor był pierwszym polskim ambasadorem, kwestie personalne i kadrowe. Wiele zarówno pozytywnych jak gorzkich odniesień dotyczy konkretnych spraw gospodarczych, biznesowych i często wielomilionowych interesów, realizowanych
w odmiennym kulturowo środowisku. Przedstawionym w książce bieżącym wydarzeniom i faktom towarzyszą refleksje historyczne i przemyślenia na temat uwarunkowań bezpieczeństwa regionalnego, konfliktów, terroryzmu, migracji i polityki Zachodu.
Unikatowy charakter ma rozdział Arabia Incognita, zawierający uwagi Autora na temat historii Półwyspu Arabskiego od czasów najdawniejszych, gdy był to obszar zielony, a dzisiejsza Zatoka Perska stanowiła dolinę wielkich rzek i miejsce opisanego w Starym Testamencie sumeryjskiego raju, poprzez epokę Szlaku Mirry i Kadzidła, wieki rywalizacji judaizmu, chrześcijaństwa i religii pogańskich poprzedzające pojawienie się islamu oraz uwarunkowania misji Proroka Mohammeda, w tym ekonomiczne, kończąc na czasach najnowszych, w których ukształtowało się państwo saudyjskie.
 

In January 2019 the M-D-M Publishing House  launched the book by Ambassador Krzysztof Płomiński, titled Arabia Incognita. Polish Ambassador’s Report. The book offers fascinating reading to anyone interested in a diplomat’s job and the functioning of  Foreign Service of Poland, particularly its interests in the Middle East. The Author has been enduringly associated with this region since his specialized studies in the State Institute of International Relations in Moscow (MGIMO). His long career included all grades of the diplomatic service in the Polish Embassies in Libya, Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HQ, starting from desk officer to ambassadorial positions in Baghdad and Riyadh and directorship of the Africa and the Middle East Department.
The Report presents the Author’s road to diplomacy, reflects realities of work in diplomatic missions and in the Ministry, as well as Ambassador Płomiński’s personal experience, including some dramatic events. The stories described, accompanied by little-known peculiarities and anecdotes, pertain to such topics as large presence of Polish employees in Arab countries before 1989, rebuilding of the relations with Israel on the edge of the transformation, daring and highly significant action of the Polish Intelligence Agency in Iraq, evacuation of the Polish nationals and the Embassy from this country in 1990 and taking over representation of the US interests there. It also elucidates the process of constructing from scratch the relationship between the Republic of Poland andthe Gulf oil states, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where the Author served as the first-ever Polish Ambassador. A lot of positive and bitter remarks are devoted to specific economic and business problems and transactions worth multiple millions done in diverse cultural environment. The developments and facts presented are followed by historic connotations and reflections as well as musings on regional security, conflicts, terrorism, migration, and West politics towards the region.
The chapter Arabia Incognita is unique among the rest. It contains the Author’s personal remarks on the history of the Arab Peninsula, starting fromthe oldest times, when the region was green and the present Persian Gulf constituted the valley of grand rivers and the location of the Sumerian Paradise described in the Old Testament, through the age of the Incense Road, the rivalry between Judaism, Christianity, and pagan religions in the centuries preceding Islam, the circumstances of Prophet Muhammad’s mission, including economic ones, and ending with modern times and the forming of the Saudi State.
