Japanese Civilization Tokens and Manifestations

The present volume gathers contributions from scholars and young researchers dedicated to the various areas of Japanese studies who participated in the international conference Japanese Civilization: Tokens and Manifestations which took place from 14th to 17th November 2013 in Kraków.

The conference was organized by the Department of Japanology and Sinology of the Jagiellonian University in cooperation with the Polish Association for Japanese Studies and the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology with a great support of the Toshiba International Foundation and the Japan Foundation.

The papers introduced during the conference pertained to vast range of topics that were organized into seven panels: History and Politics, Linguistics, Religion, Art, Pre-modern Literature, Modern Literature and Sociology. There were also four plenary sessions with lectures held by the honorary speakers. The main purpose of this event was to give the contribution to the subject of how and by what measures Japanese civilization has been manifested and expressed from the old times till present day. The participants of the conference were representing Polish and foreign academic institutions engaged in research on and teaching of Japan.
